On a group tour, the guide is the trip.

The itinerary matters. The hotels matter. But the person standing at the front of the bus at seven in the morning is the one who decides whether ten days with strangers turns into ten days with friends. They are the one who knows which side of the coach has the view, which restaurant is worth the walk, and how to fix a problem before you ever notice there was one.

We have 29 guides leading more than 125 departures in 2027. Some have been with us for more than a decade. A few started as guests, liked it enough to come back on the other side, and never left.

Here is every one of them, and everywhere they are going this year.

From Two Desks in a Basement to Tours Around the World: The Excite Experiences Story

Excite Experiences looks a little different today than it did when JJ and Cindy first got started.

Today, there’s a growing team of guides, operations staff, ambassadors, and guest relations professionals. There are tours across the United States and around the world. There are bus tours, Fly-In Tours, cruises, mystery trips, sports travel, and plenty more in between.

But in the beginning?

There were two desks, two chairs, two computers, two phones, a basement — and $100 in a new business account.

It Started With a Family Trip

For JJ, the travel bug started long before Excite had a name.

Growing up in Nebraska, family vacations were pretty simple. There were camping trips and visits to places like the Black Hills. Then, in 1999, the family decided to do something bigger: Disney.

That trip stuck.

A few years later, JJ’s Aunt Cindy was working in the tour business, and a college-aged JJ came into the office looking for a job to help pay for gas. The assignment was not especially glamorous: stamps, envelopes, and whatever else needed to be done around the office.

Then a tour guide got sick.

JJ, who was 19 and had never guided a bus tour before, was asked to fill in on a one-day trip to Omaha.

His first guest took one look at him and said, “I thought we left all these kids at home.”

A promising start.

But by the end of the day, something had clicked. JJ loved the people, the travel, and seeing familiar places through someone else’s eyes.

Soon, college classes were rearranged around guiding tours. JJ traveled throughout the United States and Europe, learning firsthand what travelers enjoyed — and what they wished group tours did differently.

Building Something Different

After college, JJ went into banking. But travel kept pulling him back.

Eventually, he approached Cindy and her husband, Tom, with an idea: What if they started their own tour company?

They had years of experience to draw from and plenty of feedback from travelers. They knew there was room to create something that felt a little different.

So they opened a business account with $100.

Tom cleared space in the basement for two desks, two chairs, two computers, and two phones. JJ and Cindy spent months working through the details: the company name, logo, tours, and the big question every new business has to answer — how do we get people to notice us?

Then they placed an ad in the newspaper alongside the established tour companies.

And waited.

Success did not happen overnight.

There were long days, late nights, and even an accountant who suggested they might want to shut the whole thing down.

They found a new accountant.

And they kept going.

Finding Their Kind of Travel

Over time, travelers started finding Excite.

By 2019, the tour calendar was gaining real momentum, with trips like Mackinac Island and Christmas in New York City helping introduce more people to the company.

Then COVID brought travel to a stop.

For JJ and Cindy, it became a moment to decide whether they still believed in what they were building.

They did.

Excite refreshed the brand, revisited its tours, and prepared to start again. When travelers were ready to get back out into the world, the company was ready too.

What had once been a handful of tours each year grew into a lineup of more than 100 experiences across the country and around the globe.

But growth was never supposed to mean becoming just another big tour company.

The goal was still the same: make travel easier to enjoy.

A Tour and a Vacation

One of the clearest ideas behind Excite came directly from years spent traveling on traditional group tours.

JJ had experienced the long days — the kind that could start at 6 a.m. and keep moving until 10 at night.

Excite wanted something different.

The idea is a mix of a tour and a vacation.

You still see the places you came to see. But there’s also room in the itinerary to slow down, explore something that interests you, grab a drink with friends, enjoy the hotel, or simply have a little time to yourself.

That same thought goes into the other pieces of the trip.

Hotels matter because you should feel comfortable with where you’re staying.

Food matters because it helps you experience where you are. If you’re in New Orleans, for example, trying the local food is part of the trip.

And the people matter — a lot.

Guides aren’t simply there to read an itinerary. They’re there to help, answer questions, adapt when something unexpected happens, and make the experience enjoyable from beginning to end.

Behind them is an operations team working on reservations, hotels, flights, transportation, and all the little details travelers hopefully never have to think about.

You Never Know Who You’ll Meet

Then there’s the part nobody can really put on an itinerary: the people you meet.

Excite has seen neighbors discover each other on the same tour, old friends reconnect, and solo travelers find people they want to travel with again.

That’s one reason group travel can work so well for someone who wants to see more of the world but doesn’t necessarily have somebody ready to go with them.

You don’t have to have a travel partner before you leave.

Sometimes you meet one along the way.

Still Growing, Still Excite

The company that started in a basement now includes dozens of people working both on tour and behind the scenes.

The destinations have grown too — from one-day regional trips to national parks, international journeys, cruises, rail adventures, sporting events, and more.

A lot has changed since the $100 business account.

The basic idea hasn’t.

Plan the complicated parts. Take care of people. Leave enough room for travelers to actually enjoy where they are.

And maybe have a little fun along the way.

Because after all these years, Excite Experiences is still built around the same thing JJ discovered on that first bus at 19:

Travel is pretty great. And the people you get to share it with are a big part of what makes it worth doing.

The Complete Guide to Traveling in Italy with Excite Experiences

Amalfi Coast | Rome | Tuscany

Italy is roughly the size of Florida. It produces about twice as much wine as the entire United States.

That comparison comes from Marco Lori, the sommelier who travels with our Tuscany group, and it is the fastest way to explain something about this country that most first-time visitors underestimate. Italy is small. What is packed into it is not.

Which is why we do not run Italy as one trip. We offer two very different Italy group tour itineraries, and choosing between them really comes down to what kind of traveler you are.

We run an Amalfi Coast and Rome itinerary that moves through Naples, Positano, Pompeii, the Vatican, and finishes in the Tuscan countryside. And we run a Tuscany food and wine immersion that parks in one agriturismo for the week and spends its days in cooking classes, cellars, olive groves, and hill towns. Same country. Completely different trips.

This guide covers both, and then it covers the part nobody tells you before you go: what traveling in Italy is actually like once you are there.

Italy Group Tour Option 1: The Amalfi Coast and Rome

"Naples and the Coast"

The trip opens in Naples, and it stays there. Same hotel every night for the first stretch, which matters more than it sounds. Because the group returns to the same place each evening, every single day of the itinerary is optional. If you wake up and decide you need a day by the pool instead of a day on a bus, that is a legitimate way to do this trip. Just tell your guide.

The first night is a group dinner at Zia Teresa on the waterfront. Not because it is on a checklist, but because eighteen people who have just flown across an ocean together need to eat, and because it is a good way to stop being strangers.

From there the days spread out along the Amalfi Coast. Ravello, high above the water. Positano, which is the postcard, and where your afternoon is genuinely your own - swim, shop, sit at a bar, walk to the beach, or do none of it. A pizza-making class in the city that invented pizza, taught by people who take it more seriously than you are expecting.

Pompeii gets a guided tour, and it deserves one. Walking a Roman city that stopped in place in 79 AD is not something you get much out of on your own.

There is an optional boat day out to the Isle of Capri, guided, with free time built in. Nearly everyone takes it.

"Rome"

Two and a half hours north, and the trip changes character entirely.

We go into the Vatican on private group tickets, which is the difference between moving through it and standing in a line. There is an included group lunch, and then the rest of that evening is yours.

The following day is a full Rome walking tour. Off and on your feet, roughly thirty minutes of walking at a stretch, all day. If you have already done Rome and would rather not do it again, stay back at the hotel. The group reconvenes for dinner that night either way.

"Into Tuscany"

The last stretch of this itinerary crosses into Tuscany, and this is where the trip slows down on purpose.

A winery visit and tasting on the way. Free time and a late lunch at Porto Santo Stefano on the coast. Then check-in at Casa Bianca, a Tuscan agriturismo with a pool, and dinner together on the property.

Then Montepulciano, which we do backwards from everyone else. The coach drops the group at the top of the hill and you walk down through the town. Every other tour parks at the bottom and climbs. There is a tour and included lunch at Icario Winery, and then back to the resort by late afternoon.

Siena the next day, on a walking tour of roughly two and a half hours. Siena is built into a slope steep enough that the restaurants have chairs stepping down the hillside. The city is organized into neighborhoods that families are born into and compete between, and once you understand that, the whole town reads differently.

The last full day is a half-day cooking class, an afternoon at the resort, and a farewell dinner on the property. Then Rome, and home.

Italy Group Tour Option 2: The Tuscany Food and Wine Immersion

This one is built differently on purpose.

We run 126 bus tours a year, and our whole approach sits somewhere between a vacation and a tour. This trip sits at the far vacation end of that range. It is planned, but the amount of time that belongs to you is significantly higher than a standard itinerary. It is meant to be food, wine, and not being in a hurry.

"The Agriturismo"

The group flies into Florence and stays at Le Terre dei Cavalieri, a countryside agriturismo, for the entire trip. Ten days, one suitcase, unpacked once.

If the word is new to you: an agriturismo is a working countryside property that also hosts guests. Stone buildings, converted barns, a pool, a restaurant on site with a chef cooking a menu that changes based on what came from the market that morning. It is not a hotel and it is not trying to be. Staying in one is a genuine part of the Tuscan experience rather than just a place to sleep.

Group size runs from 15 to 45. On smaller departures the group travels in mini buses rather than a full coach, which is not a downgrade: some of the hill roads this itinerary uses cannot take a full-size motorcoach at all.

"Marco"

Marco Lori travels with the group for the entire week.

Excite lists him as an Italian Sommelier and Master Winemaker. He is born and raised in Rome and has worked professionally in wine since 1995. He came to it by way of a father who made wine at home, which Marco describes as the worst wine he has ever tasted in his life. He learned something from it anyway.

For this trip he went out to the property in advance, worked directly with the chef, built the cooking class, and chose the wine for every pairing dinner on the itinerary. He is with the group through the days, not just at dinner.

His view of Italian wine is worth arriving with: this is a country with more than 300,000 wine growers and 45,000 producers, and the region this trip covers is among the best in it for reds. His view of which wine is best is simpler. The best wine is the one that is already empty.

"The Week"

The days are built around food, wine, and hill towns, in roughly that order.

The trip opens with Siena on arrival day, including lunch in the historic center and a walking tour of the Gothic architecture around the Piazza del Campo, before continuing to the agriturismo and a welcome dinner with Marco.

From there the days alternate between hands-on work and hill towns. A cheese-making and cooking class at Fattoria Bistecca, eaten as a farm lunch with local wine, followed by an afternoon in Cortona. A day on Lake Trasimeno with a ferry across to Isola Maggiore and its lace-making heritage, lunch on the water, and the hill town of Castiglione del Lago, closing with a wine pairing dinner where Marco connects each pour back to the places you stood in that day.

An olive oil tour at Frantoio Burraschi, then Montepulciano, where you descend into the De Ricci cellars beneath the town for a private tasting of Vino Nobile. Prosciutto making at Pratomagno Prosciutti, the frescoed city of Arezzo, and a private tasting at Villa La Ripa, a villa winery overlooking the countryside.

A chocolate factory in Perugia and the Pian di Massiano market, where what you buy becomes the cooking class back at the agriturismo that evening.

And a Brunello day at Fattoria dei Barbi, where the wine has been made for generations, with lunch paired to their vintages, then free time in Montalcino and a stop in Pienza, the UNESCO town known for its pecorino. The farewell dinner is that night, hosted by Marco.

The final full day is Florence, with a guided city tour, reserved entry to Michelangelo's David, and the Duomo, then free time before an evening at leisure and a flight home the next morning.

And if what you actually want is to sit at the resort with a glass of something and not get on a bus at all, that is allowed. We have had a guest spend an entire week on that property with cigars and wine and no regrets whatsoever.

What Traveling in Italy Is Actually Like: Customs, Tipping, and Daily Life

This is the section most guides skip, and it is the one that changes how much you enjoy the trip.

"Dinner takes a long time, and that is the point"

Your server is not ignoring you. Nobody is going to check on your table every seven minutes, and nobody is going to bring you the check until you ask for it. You are meant to sit there. You are meant to talk to the people next to you and have another glass of wine and let the courses arrive when they arrive.

American travelers routinely read this as bad service on the first night. It is not. It is the entire experience, and once you stop fighting it, it is one of the best parts of the country.

Dinner also starts late. Seven at the earliest, often later. Bring snacks, especially on the first day when everyone is jet-lagged and hungry at four in the afternoon.

"Tap water, ice, and drinks in Italy"

Drinks do not come with ice. If you want it, ask, and it will usually turn up, but it will not be the amount you are used to.

Tap water is fine to drink throughout Italy.

"Do you tip in Italy?"

You do not need to leave twenty percent. You do not need to leave thirty or forty euros on the table. Rounding up or leaving your change is normal and appreciated, and nothing bad happens if you do not.

If a meal is included in your tour, gratuity is already handled. You do not need to add anything.

Bus drivers are the exception worth knowing about. They work partly for tips, and a good one has earned it by the end of a week.

"Do you need euros in Italy?"

Do not go to your bank at home and order a stack of cash. Do not use the exchange counter at the airport, which exists to make money off people who did not know better.

Use an ATM once you arrive. That is the best rate you will get, and there is no shortage of them. Your guide will tell you when and where. You will not need cash on your travel day anyway.

Visa and Mastercard work almost everywhere. American Express is a coin flip.

"Italian hotel rooms, agriturismos, and air conditioning"

European hotel rooms in general are smaller than American ones. No enormous bathroom, no walk-in closet, no separate seating area. This is not a quality problem, it is a different standard.

Air conditioning in countryside properties is limited or absent. The buildings are stone, which holds cool the way a basement does, and fans are provided. It works better than it sounds. If you sleep hot, a small USB fan runs about ten dollars, is quiet, and packs flat.

"Older buildings have older plumbing"

In older properties, nothing goes in the toilet except what came out of you. Everything else goes in the bin. Nothing catastrophic happens if you forget once, but it is their standard and it exists for a reason.

"What to wear to churches in Italy"

A shawl or a light sweater covers you for church visits and folds into a carry-on. You are unlikely to be turned away without one, but it is the respectful thing.

"Is Rome safe? Pickpockets and common sense"

This is not a reason to be anxious. It is a reason to be sensible.

You do not need your passport on you every second of the day. You do not need every credit card you own. You do not need all of your cash. Bring what you need for the day, keep it in a front pocket or a money belt, and leave the rest in the hotel safe. This is as much about not leaving something on a bus after a wine tasting as it is about theft.

"What to wear in Italy"

Everything on tour is casual or business casual. You do not need to dress up.

Cobblestones and stilettos do not work. This has been tested.

And nobody on the trip remembers what shorts you wore four days ago. Rewear things. Mix them up. You do not need a different outfit for every day.

What to Pack for Italy and How to Prepare

"The one thing you cannot replace"

Your passport. People leave them in the printer at home with genuine regularity. Everything else you forget can be bought in Italy.

"Carry-on essentials"

Medications, always. Nobody at security is going to give you trouble over your prescriptions.

One change of clothes, in case your checked bag has a slower trip than you do.

No water bottles. They will be taken.

"Skip the jewelry on travel day"

Every necklace, watch, and heavy belt comes off at security and goes back on afterward. Wear something comfortable and simple. You can get a blanket on the plane.

"What plug adapter do you need in Italy?"

You need a European plug adapter. Buy a universal one so it works on your next trip too, and get one per person so you are not negotiating over a single outlet.

Be careful with hair dryers and straighteners. American units are built for American voltage and will burn out on European current. Most of our properties provide hair dryers, and your guide can confirm before you pack one.

"Using your phone in Italy"

An international plan is not required, but it is worth it, and it is cheap now - around ten dollars a day on most US carriers. Check with yours.

At minimum, one person in your party needs a working phone. Group communication happens by text, and Italy is a place where plans shift. A bus cannot reach a meeting point, a town is busier than expected, or you have had one glass of wine too many and cannot find your way back. That last one has happened, and being reachable is how it gets solved quickly.

Every hotel has Wi-Fi as a fallback.

"At the airport"

Arrive ninety minutes to two hours before your flight.

Find your guide before you go upstairs. We will be in the branded shirts, near the check-in counter for your airline.

Do not put your phone in airplane mode until you are physically on the plane. We may need to reach you that morning. It will not crash anything.

When you land, you will collect your bags, clear customs, and exit - there is only one way through. Your guide will be waiting past that exit.

"Delays happen, and they are handled"

There are about forty-five people working behind the scenes at Excite Experiences, and during a tour some of them are watching flights, tracking delays, and rerouting people. If something goes wrong, we will usually know before you do.

The best illustration we have: a Christmas markets departure left during a snowstorm with travelers flying from five different airports. People were stuck in Chicago, in Florida, and some had already landed in Italy. Every single person made it, and the trip was a blast.

Grab a coffee, grab a beer, be flexible. You will get there.

"Travel insurance"

Worth a second look even if you have already decided against it.

The gap most people do not think about is weather. If a storm cancels your flight, the airline does not owe you a hotel. We will arrange one, but the cost is yours. Insurance covers exactly that kind of thing, and if something does go wrong, we help you with the claim.

Buying and Shipping Wine Home from Italy

You are going to visit wineries and you are going to want to bring bottles home. Here is the honest advice from someone who overdid it the first time.

Drink it there.

The temptation is to buy a case at every stop and ship it all back. But most of what you taste is available in the States, and shipping takes a long time - months, in one case. What you actually want is the bottle you cannot get at home, or the one attached to a memory. Buy that one. Ship it, or check it in your luggage.

Everything else, open it while you are sitting somewhere in Tuscany with the people you have been traveling with all week. That is the version you will remember.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Italy Tours

Do I have to do every activity on the itinerary?

Mostly no, with one limit. On days when the group is based at the same hotel and returning to it that night, activities are genuinely optional. During the Naples portion you sleep in the same hotel every night, so if you would rather skip Pompeii and spend the day at the hotel, that is a legitimate choice. The Tuscany trip works the same way, with one property for the whole week. We have had a guest spend an entire Tuscany week on the property with cigars and a drink in hand and skip nearly every excursion. The exception is a travel day, when the group is moving on to the next destination and you need to be on the bus. All we ask otherwise is that you tell your guide, so nobody is looking for you.

How physically demanding are these tours?

Our own guidance on these tours is direct: they require walking on cobblestone streets, various modes of transportation, and uneven terrain, and you should factor that in before booking. You will also need to handle your own luggage.

In practice, expect real walking at a manageable pace. The Rome day is on and off your feet all day, typically in stretches of about thirty minutes. Italian hill towns are the bigger factor, because Montepulciano, Siena, and Cortona are built on genuine slopes with cobblestone and uneven stone rather than sidewalk. We plan around it where we can, including dropping the group at the top of Montepulciano so you walk down while every other tour climbs up. Comfortable shoes matter more than any other packing decision you will make.

How much luggage can I bring?

One checked bag is included, plus your carry-on and a personal item. Pack lighter than you think you need to. Between the fact that nobody notices repeated outfits and the laundry options below, most travelers come home wishing they had brought less.

Can I do laundry during the tour?

Yes. At some point during your tour you will be at a hotel offering laundry service, which is a paid service you arrange at the property. The critical detail is timing: send it out on your first day at that hotel, never your last. If you hand it over the night before the group moves on, you will leave before your clothes come back.

How do I get my daily itinerary and schedule?

Through the Trip Plans app. You download it from your app store, then go back to the itinerary email and click through again, which auto-populates your trip into the app. It takes two steps rather than one, which catches people out. If the app is not for you, we will send the same information as a PDF, and your guide can set it up with you in person once you arrive.

What happens if my flight is delayed or canceled?

We handle it, and there is a good chance we know before you do. Around forty-five people work at Excite Experiences, and during a tour some of them are watching flights and rerouting travelers in real time. The clearest example we have: a Christmas markets departure left during a snowstorm with guests flying out of five different airports. People were stranded in Chicago and Florida while others had already landed in Europe. Everyone made the trip. What we cannot do is cover a weather-related hotel, because airlines do not reimburse those, which is the strongest single argument for travel insurance.

Will someone meet me at the airport in Italy?

Yes. You will collect your bags, clear customs, and exit, and there is only one route through, so you cannot take a wrong turn. Your guide will be waiting past the exit. If you booked your own flights or arrive at a different time, we arrange your meeting point with you in advance. Nobody gets left standing in an airport wondering where the group went.

What is included in the tour price?

Airfare is included, along with elevated accommodations, original meals prepared for the group, motorcoach transportation, a professional tour director for the duration, and a homemade chocolate chip cookie, which is not a joke and has its own icon on our tour pages. Gratuities and travel insurance are not included. Meal counts vary by itinerary, so check the specific tour page for the exact number.

Can I travel with you if I book my own flights?

Yes. If you book separate flights, let us know your arrival details and we coordinate your meeting point with the group. On the return, we make sure you are at the airport in time for your own flight rather than the group departure.

One of our guides puts it better than we could. The two things you need most on this trip are a sense of humor and patience.

Kingdoms of Southeast Asia: Four Countries, 19 Days, and the Trip That Changes How You See the World

The first time Kristen went to Southeast Asia, she went by herself, and she was nervous about it. She booked a group tour, flew into Hanoi knowing almost nothing about where she was going, and came home having realized she had been worried about the wrong things.

So she went back. And then again. More than 80 days across the region over two summers, out of 25 countries she has traveled to in total. Southeast Asia is still the one she tells people to go to.

Today she is on our operations team, which means she is one of the people who builds an itinerary before it ever gets published: the flights, the hotels, the order of the days, all the pieces that have to line up for a trip to actually work. So when we started putting Kingdoms of Southeast Asia together, she was one of the people building it.

Here is the first thing she will tell you about going.

"It can be a place that might seem scary or overwhelming. But the culture, the people, they are so welcoming. They want us there."

That is worth putting up front, because it is the honest starting point. Southeast Asia is the most culturally different place most American travelers will ever go. The food is unfamiliar. The languages are unfamiliar. Daily life runs on a rhythm that has nothing to do with home.

That is not the obstacle. That is the entire reason to go.

Why This Southeast Asia Tour 2027 Is Built Differently

Two things separate this trip from a standard Asia itinerary.

The first is group size. This tour averages 16 travelers and caps at 24. On a continent where the default is a coach full of fifty people following a flag through a temple complex, a group this small changes the entire texture of the experience. You move faster. You get into places a large group cannot. And by the end of nineteen days, the people you started with are not strangers.

The second is the guiding. Vietnam: Where the Trip Begins

"Hanoi"

You land in Hanoi in northern Vietnam and spend the first several days there, and the city does not ease you in gently. Scooters move through the streets in numbers that have to be seen to be understood. The Old Quarter is a dense grid of narrow streets that have been trading in the same goods for centuries. The Temple of Literature, founded in 1070 as Vietnam's first national university, sits in the middle of it all as a reminder of how old this city actually is.

The food alone justifies the stop. A guided walking food tour early in the itinerary introduces you to the street food culture properly, and Hanoi's banh mi - the Vietnamese baguette sandwich that emerged from the collision of French colonial baking and Vietnamese ingredients - is among the best in the country. The city is also home to egg coffee, a Hanoi invention of whipped egg yolk, condensed milk, and strong Vietnamese coffee that sounds strange and tastes like liquid tiramisu. A rooftop coffee shop overlooking Hoan Kiem Lake is on the itinerary.

On free time, Kristen's recommendation is Train Street - a residential lane where an active railway runs so close to the cafes and shopfronts that tables and chairs have to be pulled back minutes before each train passes. When the train has gone, everything moves back into place and the lattes resume.

The most affecting day in Hanoi is the visit to Hoa Lo Prison, known to American prisoners of war as the Hanoi Hilton, followed by a conversation with a Vietnam War veteran. Kristen had this same experience on her own trip and describes it as one of the most powerful things she has done while traveling - a chance to understand a piece of history from a perspective you cannot get from a book.

"Ha Long Bay"

Ha Long Bay is the image most people already have in their heads when they think of Vietnam, and it earns it. Nearly two thousand limestone karsts rise vertically out of emerald water across a bay that has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994.

This tour includes an overnight cruise on the bay. Fresh seafood, kayaking into hidden alcoves between the islands, sunrise tai chi on the sun deck, and a visit to Sung Sot Cave - the Surprise Cave - an enormous limestone grotto lit up inside the rock. Kristen only managed a day trip on her own visit and still describes it as one of the most beautiful places she has ever been. The overnight version is the one people talk about for years.

"Hoi An"

If Ha Long Bay is the postcard, Hoi An is the place people fall in love with unexpectedly.

A former trading port on Vietnam's central coast, Hoi An's old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site that has been preserved almost entirely intact. Yellow-walled merchant houses, a 400-year-old Japanese Covered Bridge, Chinese assembly halls, and a river running through the middle of it with wooden boats moving up and down. At night the entire town is lit by silk lanterns. Kristen's description is that it feels like time travel.

Hoi An is also famous for its tailors. You can walk into a shop, choose fabric, get measured by hand, and pick up a fully custom-made suit, dress, or shirt a day or two later. Kristen had a floor-length dress made for between 75 and 100 dollars. Custom, hand-sewn, fitted twice. There are tailors at every price point and it is one of the most unusual souvenirs available anywhere in the world.

The Hoi An days also include a cooking class where you learn to catch seafood in the river and grind rice into flour before cooking a local dish with what you gathered, a ride in a traditional round basket boat on the coconut palm waterways where the boatmen spin the boats in place as a party trick, and a hands-on lantern-making session.

"Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta"

Ho Chi Minh City, still widely known as Saigon, is Vietnam's largest city and its commercial engine. The colonial architecture is the visual signature - the Saigon Central Post Office designed in the late 1800s, the Notre Dame Cathedral built with materials shipped from France, and the Reunification Palace where the Vietnam War formally ended in 1975.

The scooters here reach a scale that has to be experienced. An optional evening Vespa street food tour takes you through the city on the back of a scooter with a local driver, stopping at food spots along the way. Kristen has done this multiple times and calls it one of her favorite travel experiences anywhere.

From the city, the tour heads into the Mekong Delta - the vast river system that feeds much of Vietnam - with a boat journey, a stop at a coconut candy workshop, and the chance to try durian, the notoriously pungent fruit that tastes far better than it smells.

The final day in Vietnam is spent at the Cu Chi Tunnels, the underground network used during the Vietnam War, which runs for over 120 kilometers beneath the countryside outside the city. Visitors can descend into sections of the tunnels themselves.

Cambodia: Angkor and What Came After

"Siem Reap and Angkor Wat"

Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world. Built in the early twelfth century as a Hindu temple and later converted to Buddhist use, it covers roughly 400 acres and has been in near-continuous use for over 900 years. It appears on the Cambodian flag - the only national flag in the world featuring a building.

Standing in front of it is the kind of experience that reorders your sense of what pre-modern civilizations were capable of. The carving detail across the temple walls runs for hundreds of meters. You can climb up through the structure and move through its levels. Monks are present at altars inside, and visitors can receive a blessing.

Angkor Wat is the headline, but the surrounding archaeological park contains hundreds of temples, and this itinerary visits several. Bayon is the temple of faces - over 200 enormous stone faces carved into its towers, gazing out in every direction. Ta Prohm is the temple the jungle reclaimed, where enormous fig and silk-cotton tree roots have grown directly through and over the stone walls. It became internationally famous as a filming location for Tomb Raider, and it is one of the most photographed places in Cambodia for good reason.

"The Hero Rats"

One of the most unexpected stops on the entire itinerary is a demonstration of Cambodia's landmine detection rats.

Decades after the conflicts that shaped this region, unexploded ordnance still contaminates land across Cambodia. African giant pouched rats are trained to detect the scent of explosives. They are light enough not to trigger the mines, and they clear ground faster than metal detectors because they ignore scrap metal entirely. The program is ongoing, actively saving lives, and getting to see the rats work is both genuinely fascinating and a sobering piece of context for everything else you are seeing in the region.

"The Countryside and the Floating Village"

The Cambodia days also include a look at how rice noodles are made, a palm sugar market where you learn how sap is tapped from the trees and used in local cooking, and a visit to Kampong Khleang - a floating village on the Tonle Sap lake where houses stand on stilts fifteen to twenty feet above the ground during dry season and sit at water level when the lake floods. Evenings include a night market, which in Southeast Asia is an entire cultural institution rather than just a place to shop.

Laos: The Country Most Travelers Miss

"Luang Prabang"

Laos is the quietest of the four countries on this itinerary and, according to Kristen, one of the most rewarding. Most travelers to Southeast Asia go to Thailand and Vietnam. Fewer make it to Laos. That is precisely why it is worth going.

Luang Prabang sits at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, surrounded by mountains, and its entire old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city is a blend of traditional Lao wooden architecture and French colonial buildings, dotted with gilded Buddhist monasteries and moving at a pace that feels almost deliberately unhurried.

The itinerary here includes the National Museum, housed in the former Royal Palace, a monastery visit, and a trip to see the thousands of Buddha statues that have been placed in the riverside caves over centuries. Getting around by tuk tuk - the three-wheeled open-air taxis that are the standard local transport - is part of the experience.

"Hill Tribe Village and Waterfall"

The final full day in Laos includes a visit to a traditional hill tribe village to learn about a way of life that is genuinely different from anything most travelers have encountered, followed by one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the region. Kristen did a multi-day version of this in Thailand and describes the welcome from the communities as one of the highlights of her time in Asia.

Thailand: Ending in Bangkok

Bangkok is loud, enormous, and absolutely alive. It is where this trip ends, and it is a fitting close.

The itinerary includes the temples along the river, including Wat Pho and its reclining Buddha - a gilded figure 46 meters long and 15 meters high, one of the largest of its kind in Thailand. The ornate detail across Bangkok's temple architecture is unlike anything else on the trip. The farewell dinner happens here, with a group that started as strangers nineteen days earlier.

For those adding the optional three-night Bangkok extension, there is time for the floating markets, where vendors sell food and goods directly from boats along the canals, and considerably more of a city that most people wish they had given more time.

Activity Level and What to Expect

Streets and walkways across Southeast Asia are accessible but are not always as level as what most American travelers are used to.

On the long-haul flight, Kristen's advice from experience: compression socks, a neck pillow, stretching before you board and again during the flight, and keeping your legs moving. The first port is one of the Caribbean's most historically significant cities. "The Panama Canal Transit"

Day seven is the day the entire cruise builds toward. Over approximately eight hours, the Crown Princess will transit the full Panama Canal - from the Atlantic entrance at Colon through three sets of locks to the Pacific entrance at Panama City.

The locks are the engineering story. The canal does not cross flat ground. It climbs. The locks lift ships 85 feet above sea level to reach Gatun Lake, then lower them back down on the Pacific side. Each lock chamber fills or drains with fresh water, raising or lowering the ship as you watch. The canal walls are close enough to feel the scale from the deck. The tropical forest presses in on both sides. The whole process takes the better part of a day, and there are bars, lounges, and viewing areas throughout the ship designed to make watching comfortable.

The canal was completed in 1914 - a fact that prompts the obvious question of how it was built at all with the technology of that era. The answer involves one of the most ambitious engineering projects in human history: 10 years of construction, a workforce drawn from dozens of countries, the excavation of 268 million cubic yards of earth, and the creation of what was at the time the largest man-made lake in the world. The canal has been operating continuously for over 110 years and remains one of the most important waterways on earth, handling roughly 14,000 ships per year.

There are no shore excursions during the canal transit. The day is spent on board watching it happen. JJ describes it as one of the primary reasons for this cruise, and it is easy to see why.

"Panama City"

After clearing the canal, the ship docks at Panama City on the Pacific side. The causeway connecting the city to four small offshore islands was built using the rock excavated during the canal's construction - a detail that makes the whole area feel like a footnote to the engineering story you just experienced. The waterfront marina district has restaurants, shops, and views back across the water toward the canal entrance. Shore excursions go into the historic Casco Viejo district, the canal visitors' center, and the surrounding city.

"Punta Arenas, Costa Rica"

Costa Rica has been called the Switzerland of the Americas - a country that punches dramatically above its size in biodiversity and natural landscape. Punta Arenas is the Pacific gateway to the capital San Jose and to some of the most extraordinary natural environments in Central America. The cloud forest at Monteverde is accessible as an excursion, as are beach clubs on Costa Rica's renowned Pacific coast, jungle wildlife tours, and city experiences in San Jose. The mountains of the interior rise to over 13,000 feet. The beaches are consistently ranked among the best in Central America. This is a port that rewards whatever level of activity you bring to it.

The southernmost Mexican port on the itinerary sits at the edge of the Sierra Madre mountains in a region known for coffee plantations, tropical flowers, and some of the most biodiverse rainforest in North America. Huatulco is nine bays and dozens of beaches spread across a stretch of Pacific coast surrounded by rainforest-covered mountains and a protected ecological reserve. "Rovinj"

The first port in Croatia has the feel of a place that has not entirely decided whether it belongs to Italy or Croatia. Rovinj sits on the Istrian Peninsula and was under Venetian rule for centuries, which you see immediately in the architecture - narrow cobblestone streets, colorful Renaissance buildings, the Baroque bell tower of St. Euphemia's Church rising above everything on the hilltop. The harbor is filled with fishing boats. The streets are lined with art galleries. It is a port made for wandering without a plan.

"Sibenik"

One of Croatia's oldest towns, founded in 1066, Sibenik has been claimed by the Venetians, the Byzantines, the Hungarians, and the Habsburgs - which means its architecture reads like a survey of medieval European history. The city is home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites, the most striking of which is St. James Cathedral, a fifteenth-century architectural fusion of Gothic and Renaissance that took over a hundred years to build. The Nikola Fort, reached by a staircase from the seaside promenade, offers views over the old city and the water below.

"Trogir"

Trogir is a small island connected to the Croatian mainland by bridge, and its entire old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site - one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe. The Cathedral of St. Lawrence dominates the Old Town Square, and climbing the cathedral's bell tower gives you views over the red rooftops and the water that most visitors never see. The seaside promenade below is lined with bars and cafes and is, according to JJ, perfect for an afternoon of people watching.

"Vis and the Blue Cave"

Vis was a Yugoslav military base from the 1950s until 1989, closed to outside visitors for nearly four decades. That isolation preserved the island in a way that is genuinely rare on the Croatian coast. It is unhurried and authentic in a way that the more tourist-heavy islands are not.

The main excursion from Vis is the Blue Cave, and it is one of the most visually striking things on the entire trip. You take a speedboat across the channel to the island of Bisevo, then board smaller wooden boats that paddle you through a narrow cave opening. Inside, the combination of sunlight, water clarity, and the white sand below the surface turns everything an electric shade of blue that photographs cannot fully capture. JJ's description of it is simple: "I think everybody should do that."

The island was also used as the setting for Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, playing the role of a fictional Greek island. The setting makes clear why it was chosen.

"Hvar"

Hvar is the sunniest place in all of Croatia - a fact the island wears visibly in its lavender fields, olive groves, and terracotta rooftops baking in the summer light. The old town is a layered history lesson: Vast St. Stephen Square, a cathedral built across the 16th and 17th centuries, and a restored arsenal that once served war galleons. Above the town, the medieval Fortica fortress offers panoramic views over the harbor and the surrounding islands.

The harbor itself is a spectacle. Hvar has long attracted the kind of international crowd that arrives by private yacht - JJ describes rows of superyachts lined along the waterfront - and the town's restaurants and bars have calibrated to match. It is a genuinely beautiful place to spend an afternoon, and it looks particularly extraordinary at night.

"Korcula"

Locals call Korcula "Little Dubrovnik." The fortified medieval old town on its UNESCO-listed peninsula, the Gothic and Renaissance churches, the elegant palaces and stone squares - all of it carries the same architectural DNA as Croatia's most famous city at a fraction of the crowds.

Korcula is also the birthplace of Marco Polo, which the town marks with the Marco Polo Centre, and it is renowned for producing some of Croatia's finest dry white wine. The island's vineyards have been cultivating wine since ancient times, and one of the most memorable excursions available here is a four-by-four island tour that visits local wineries and ends at the beach.

JJ did this excursion and recommends it without hesitation. The tour stops at a local winemaker who ages bottles on the floor of the Adriatic Sea - submerged under extreme pressure and cold temperatures for years before being brought back up encrusted with shells. He bought a bottle. Most people do.

"Dubrovnik"

The final port is Dubrovnik, and it saves the most famous sight for last. If you have watched Game of Thrones, you have already seen Dubrovnik - the city's medieval walled old town served as the visual model for King's Landing. In person, the walls are more impressive and the setting more dramatic than the show suggests. The old city is entirely pedestrian, entirely enclosed within its ancient stone walls, and one of the most striking urban environments in Europe.

What Is the Payment Protection Plan?

The Payment Protection Plan (PPP) is an optional add-on available when you book any Excite Experiences tour. When you purchase it, both your deposit and all payments made toward your trip are fully refundable if you need to cancel — for any reason up to 24 hours before your departure date.

Without the PPP, our standard cancellation policy applies. That policy is outlined below so you know exactly where you stand either way.

How the Cancellation Policy Works Without the PPP

If you choose not to add the Payment Protection Plan, the following cancellation schedule applies to your booking:

90 days before departure: Your deposit becomes non-refundable.

60 to 31 days before departure: 50% of all payments made are non-refundable.

30 days or less before departure: 100% of all payments made are non-refundable.

This is a standard policy in the group tour industry and is in place because Excite Experiences commits to hotels, transportation, guides, and vendors well in advance of your trip date. How the Payment Protection Plan Works

Purchase the PPP at the time of booking, or within 10 days of your initial deposit. After that 10-day window, the PPP can no longer be added or removed, and the cost is non-refundable.

Once you have the PPP on your booking, you are covered. If you need to cancel for any reason, you will receive a full refund of your deposit and all payments made — as long as you cancel at least 24 hours before your departure.

If cancellation happens within 24 hours of departure, all payments are non-refundable regardless of PPP status.

What Does the PPP Cost?

The cost of the Payment Protection Plan is based on the total price of your trip and is priced per person.

What About Travel Insurance?

The Payment Protection Plan is not the same as travel insurance, and we want to be clear about the difference.

The PPP is an Excite Experiences product that protects your payments if you cancel. It covers cancel for any reason, and it is managed directly by us.

Travel insurance is a separate, optional product we offer through our partner Redion (TripMate). It covers unexpected events that can happen during your trip — things like medical emergencies, trip interruptions, lost or delayed baggage, travel delays, and more. Travel insurance does not cover cancel for any reason.

Redion insurance is available in Basic and Deluxe plans, and you have up until 30 days before your departure date to add it. Both products can be purchased together, and many travelers choose to do exactly that - PPP for cancellation flexibility, TripMate for protection once the trip is underway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to purchase the PPP?

No. The Payment Protection Plan is completely optional. If you choose not to add it, the standard cancellation policy outlined above applies to your booking.

When do I need to purchase the PPP?

You can add the PPP at the time of booking or within 10 days of your initial deposit. After that window closes, it can no longer be added.

Can I add the PPP to a trip I already booked?

If you booked a trip after February 20, 2026 and are still within 10 days of your initial deposit, yes. If you are outside that window, the PPP can no longer be added to your booking. Contact our team and we will walk you through your options.

What if I booked my trip before February 20, 2026?

If your booking was made before February 20, 2026, the previous cancellation policy applies to your reservation. This new policy and the PPP apply only to tours booked on or after February 20, 2026.

What counts as a cancellation under the PPP?

Any cancellation made at least 24 hours before your scheduled departure date qualifies for a full refund under the PPP, regardless of the reason. Cancellations made within 24 hours of departure are non-refundable.

Does the PPP cover travel insurance events like medical emergencies or baggage loss?

How to Pack for a Group Tour:

At Excite Experiences, we handle just about everything on your trip - the hotels, the meals, the activities, the guides. But there is one thing we cannot do for you: pack your bag. That part is yours.

So we asked our co-owner, Cindy - who has packed for more trips than she can count - to walk us through exactly how she does it. This is her system, in her words. Take what works for you and leave the rest.

Start With a Number, Not a List

Before Cindy pulls a single item from her closet, she does one thing: she figures out how many days she is going to be gone.

"This trip is going to be four days. So I figure, okay, I need four sets of clothes."

Simple as that. Starting with a number keeps you anchored. Instead of packing by feel - grabbing things that seem useful - you pack with a clear limit in mind. Four days means four bottoms. And Cindy's rule for tops: take two for every bottom.

"Just in case it's warm or it's cold. Or if you spill something on it."

Two tops per bottom sounds like a lot until you are on day three of a tour and grateful you have options. It also gives you flexibility without overpacking - the single most common mistake travelers make.

How to Organize Your Suitcase

Once she knows what she is bringing, Cindy loads the suitcase in a specific order. It is not random, and it is not just about fitting everything in - it is about keeping your clothes in good shape when you arrive.

"Wheels down, heavy items first."

Orient the suitcase so the wheels are at the bottom. Then load the heaviest items - shoes, makeup bag, toiletries - along that bottom edge. This keeps the weight low and stable, and protects your clothes from being crushed by dead weight.

"Shoes go in bags."

Cindy puts every pair of shoes in its own bag before it goes in the suitcase. Wet soles, mud, scuffs - none of it ends up on your clothes. If you do not have dedicated shoe bags, a shower cap or a spare plastic bag works fine.

"Layer your slacks, do not roll them."

Cindy lays her trousers flat and layers them one on top of the other across the full width of the suitcase.

"I feel I don't have as many creases. Some people roll them, and they don't have any creases, but I've never had any luck with that."

Both methods work - rolling is better for casual knits and jeans, and layering tends to work better for dress trousers and anything structured. Try both and see what your clothes prefer.

"Use a hanging clothes folder for tops."

This is Cindy's favorite trick for avoiding the iron. She folds her tops into a hanging garment folder - the kind with a built-in hanger - so that when she arrives at the hotel, she pulls the folder out, hangs it in the closet, and her tops are ready to wear.

"When you get to the hotel room, all you have to do is take these and hang them up in the closet, and you won't have to iron."

Choose tops in fabrics that travel well - wrinkle-resistant blends, jersey knits, anything with a little stretch. If you are buying new things for a trip, put this at the top of the checklist.

"Pack an extra bag for the trip home."

Cindy always tucks a folded tote or lightweight bag into her suitcase before she leaves. Because you always come home with more than you left with - a bottle of wine, a souvenir, a jacket you bought because it was cold. Having the extra bag means you are not sitting on your suitcase trying to force the zipper.

What Goes in Your Carry-On

The carry-on is not an overflow bag for items that didn't fit in your suitcase. For Cindy, it is a survival kit - the things she would need if her checked bag got lost or her flight got delayed.

"An extra outfit." Always. If you get stranded overnight, you will be glad you have it.

"An extra pair of shoes." A compact flat or a casual sneaker takes up almost no space and covers you if your luggage goes missing.

"Your medications." This one is non-negotiable. Prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, anything you take regularly - it goes in the carry-on, not the checked bag. If your bag gets lost, everything else is replaceable. Your medications may not be.

"Your laptop, cords, and files." Electronics and any work or travel documents belong in the carry-on. Checked bags get rough handling, and laptops do not fare well under it.

"A few snacks." Airports are expensive, and tours move fast. A few snacks in your bag go a long way between meals.

A Note on TSA and Airport Rules

Two things Cindy sees trip up travelers at security more than anything else:

"Liquids over three ounces." Anything liquid, gel, or aerosol that weighs more than 3 ounces needs to go in your checked bag. Shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, perfume - if it is bigger than a travel size, check it. TSA will take it otherwise.

"Food on international trips." Some destinations have strict agricultural restrictions. When Cindy traveled to Hawaii, food items had to undergo separate agricultural screening. Going overseas, certain foods cannot be brought in at all. When in doubt, leave the food at home or finish it before you land.
